| As described at the end of Wonderful Life, Pikaia is possibly the most exciting of all the animals found within the Burgess Shale due to the fact that it appears to be the earliest known representative of the chordate phylum. This is the phylum that all vertebrates including ourselves belong to. This small eel like creature (or one of its close relatives) may well be one of our very distant ancestors!
